Chennai Metro Phase II’s 14.6-km Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch is likely to be inaugurated on October 11, 2026, improving connectivity through Porur and western Chennai.

Chennai Metro Phase II Reaches Major Milestone

Chennai’s Metro Rail expansion is set to reach an important milestone with the 14.6-km Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II likely to be inaugurated on October 11, 2026. Recent reports indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the stretch during his proposed visit to Tamil Nadu. The final programme details are subject to official confirmation.

The corridor is part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase II, connecting the western suburbs with the existing Metro network at Vadapalani. The route passes through important areas including Poonamallee, Kumananchavadi, Iyyappanthangal, Porur, Alapakkam and Valasaravakkam.

14.6-Km Metro Stretch

The Poonamallee–Vadapalani section covers approximately 14.6 km and includes 11 elevated stations. It forms part of the larger Lighthouse–Poonamallee corridor under Chennai Metro Phase II.

The new section is expected to provide an additional public transport option for people travelling between western Chennai and the city’s established Metro network. At Vadapalani, connectivity with the existing Metro system is being developed to facilitate passenger interchange.

PM Modi May Take a Metro Ride

According to reports, Prime Minister Modi may travel by Metro from Poonamallee to Porur as part of the inauguration programme. His proposed Chennai visit may also include other official events, although the complete itinerary has not yet been officially announced.

Expected Impact on Western Chennai

The new Metro stretch is expected to strengthen public transport connectivity across the rapidly developing western parts of Chennai. Areas along the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani corridor could gain improved access to the wider Metro network.

The service is also expected to offer commuters an alternative to road travel on busy arterial routes. Initial reports indicate that Metro services could operate at around 10-minute intervals, with approximately 15 trains planned for operations.

Chennai Metro Phase II

Chennai Metro Phase II is planned across approximately 118.9 km and three corridors. The Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch is among the first sections of Phase II prepared for passenger operations.

The 14.6-km section received the required safety clearance after inspections, paving the way for its proposed opening.

What This Means for Chennai

The proposed opening could improve connectivity between:

Poonamallee
Kumananchavadi
Iyyappanthangal
Porur
Alapakkam
Valasaravakkam
Vadapalani

For residents, employees, students and businesses located along this corridor, the new Metro service could provide another option for daily travel and connections to Chennai’s wider public transport network.

October 11 Inauguration: What to Watch

While several reports currently point to October 11, 2026, commuters should look for the final official announcement regarding the inauguration programme, passenger-service commencement, timings, fares and station-wise operating details.

The opening of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani section would mark a significant step in the expansion of Chennai Metro Phase II.
